Breastfeeding

Anyone who has tried breast feeding knows in most cases it is not always as easy as it seems.
Sometimes it takes alot of patience and help.
Here I will go through some of the things that can help with your breast feeding problems.
I will show you the products tried and tested by breast feeding mums, including breastfeeding covers, breastfeeding pillows, breastfeeding tops and breastfeeding bras.
The only thing I won't tell you is how to breastfeed. That is best left to the experts I would recommend a lactation consultant in your area, your local maternity ward, or the Australian Breastfeeding Association.

To Start -

Booby Booster : A breastfeeding aid for woman with large breasts.

Booby Booster

Invented by a breastfeeding mum, this product attaches to your maternity bra and sits under the breast while feeding, supports the breast to stay in place.
A heavy breast can cause the nipple to drop. The breastfeeding sling helps avoid the nipple slipping out of the baby’s mouth while feeding, avoiding nipple damage and poor latch on.

Indispensable for all mothers who in a relaxed manner want to feed their baby in public: The minimonkey nursing cover. Put the cover over your baby when you want to feed your baby and look at your baby through the opening above. Privacy is guaranteed, because your surroundings cannot see your nursing baby or your bare breast. The nursing cover is also perfect for mothers who use a breast pump!

Breastfeed discreetly whilst watching the baby through the opening
The nursing cover
With the slightly raised, soft edge of the minimonkey nursing cover you can watch your nursing baby - but people around you see nothing! The nursing cover protects your baby and covers your upper body so that you don’t have to nurse openly. Many women find it annoying and distracting to breastfeed if other people are around. Minimonkey made its own ‘simple and smart’ design, especially for women who go for practical solutions. In addition, the minimonkey nursing cover is very easy to fold and carry.

Additional benefits
Although the nursing cover is primarily designed for breast-feeding, it is also a great solution for women who use a breast pump. Pumping often takes time, but with the nursing cover you no longer need to hide away in another room. An additional advantage of the nursing cover is that your baby can nurse quietly without being distracted by your surroundings. This makes the minimonkey nursing cover ideal for bottle fed babies as well.

Pumping discreet
Simple and smart
You simply cover your baby by draping the cover around your neck. Because of the light and airy material it’s very comfortable for your baby. Another handy detail are the two handy spit towels sewn into each corner for an easy access. At the front of the nursing cover you will find a pouch in which you can put little things, such as a dummy or wipes. After you are finished feeding your baby, you simply fold the nursing cover into the pouch which makes it very compact and easy to take along.

When should I start wearing a maternity bra?

The Australian Breastfeeding Association information suggests that the breasts begin to prepare for your baby quite early in pregnancy, some woman will feel uncomfortable or will fully outgrow their usual bra sooner than others.
As a general rule most changes to the breast have occurred by around 16 weeks and this is a good time to be fitted for a new maternity bra, if you haven’t been already. Stork Maternity provides a professional and free bra fitting service in store.

Is it true I can’t wear and underwire bra?

Many women would prefer to wear an underwire bra but an underwire is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The reason for this is the changing size of your breasts. A rigid underwire or ill fitting bra can put pressure on already tender breasts and milkducts which may lead to blockages. When breastfeeding, the breasts increase and decrease in size and retained fluid during pregnancy can cause your breasts to swell in size. Underwire bras that have been outgrown can be uncomfortable and when the breast is fuller this pressure can lead to blocked (plugged) ducts and possibly in some cases infection (mastitis).

How does a maternity bra differ from a normal bra?

There are many different styles and designs of maternity bras available. A good maternity bra should have the following features.

* Extended hook and eye clips
* Drop feeding cups
* Wide diaphragm for support
* Soft cotton lining for comfort
* Inner sling for support inside the cup and to keep straps in place while feeding.
* No underwire

At Stork Maternity we offer the most trusted brands of maternity bra's and lingerie including HOTmilk, Lovable, Womama, Bendon and Berlei. We have a style, size and colour to suit everybody.

Will I get the same support from a maternity bra as an underwire?

Maternity bras are designed in such a way that you will get support from a well fitted maternity bra. When you are fitted for a maternity bra you should be able to adjust the fitting to accomodate further cup and diaphram size increases during the pregnancy and again when the milk comes in about day 3 after giving birth as well as have the option of decreasing the fitting as your body returns to your pre-pregnancy size.
Should I wear a bra to bed?

Wearing a bra to bed is a personal preference. Some women like to wear a bra to bed for support if they have tender breasts in the early weeks of the pregnancy and to hold breast pads in place when lactating. An alternative to this would be a feeding singlet with a supportive cup or shelf bra and nursing clips, making it much more comfortable and convenient to feed your new baby.

How many bras will I need?

During pregnancy it is recommended to have at least 2 bras, 1 lighter in color and one darker to go under any outfit. During breastfeeding 3-4 bras is ideal as your breasts may leak milk between feeds and you may need to change your bra more frequently than usual. Most women find that one on, one in the wash and one ready to go works well.
